Heritage Letters: Leaving A Legacy

Heritage Letters

~Heritage Letters~

I read once that the written word is the most precious of all relics…I tend to agree. Writing has the potential to be a lasting sentimental treasure you gift your future generations. A true relic of ones past.

I’m a bit of a sentimental fool (ok, overly sentimental) so I cherish each little letter, note, card or written sentiment someone gifts me. I have the very first notes my daughters ever scratched out for me and all their little stick figure drawings. I have irreplaceable letters from my Grandmother and a box full of letters from Great-Grandparents I never met. I’ve kept every letter anyone has sent me in the last 15 years and I’ve carefully stored my own journals. All treasures, all priceless in my humble opinion.

When my daughters were little I started what has turned out to be my greatest gift for them. I started writing letters to them. A memory here, a thought there. I documented in a way the changes in their lives, little conversations we had together, anything I thought would be of interest to them in their futures. A gift of their own legacy documented by their Mother ~ Me. At this point, I have boxes, and boxes of letters, all sealed and unopened, that I plan to gift my daughters someday. I can’t wait.

Heritage Letters are about writing from ourselves to our future. Whether that future be our own children, their children, generations from now or for a spouse to read next year. It’s about leaving a piece of ourselves imprinted on this earth so that others may understand where we came from or so they can learn something about how the world was on a certain Saturday on a fall October afternoon in 2009. I believe it’s presumptuous to assume we… I, will be here tomorrow, so today I will write and preserve pieces of myself in words.

That is the purpose of the Heritage Letters that I’ll be writing on this site and then printing out for their intended receivers. Preservation of Self and a Gift for others ~
