Christmas Cards, What to Write Inside…

It happens every year.

I sit down with 3 or 4 boxes of newly purchased Christmas cards. A long (long) list of addresses and it’s time to write 60+ Christmas greetings to family and friends and I ponder…

...what to write inside a Christmas Card this year...

As much as I would love to say I write a personal and unique message to each and every person on my Christmas card list, I don’t. For a few reasons.

First off, the majority of people who receive Christmas Cards, display them for all to enjoy which means personal should be kept to a minimum. This isn’t the place to mention a personal event in either your life or your intended card receivers life. If you would like to go personal, then write inside the card and then include a separate note as well. One that can be removed and tucked away.

Second off, writing individual and unique messages in each card is extremely time consuming. I know, I’ve done it.

Lastly, there usually isn’t a lot of room for a long drawn out personal message. Again, if you need to do this, write a separate note!

So this is what I started doing a few years ago. I pick a theme or two for the year and write a message around it. Example of ‘themes’ I’ve used.

  • Create Memories
  • Enjoying one another
  • Being Thankful
  • The Joy of Others
  • Finding the Magic in the Season
  • And so on…..

Once I have picked a theme for my Christmas Cards, I create a manageable phrase that will go into all of my Christmas Cards.

For Example:

Create memories:
Dear So & So,

Happy Holidays to you! Know that I am thinking about you this Holiday season and I hope that you and your loved ones create many memories that will last a lifetime. Take care, be safe and most of all, enjoy all the little moments. ~ Rebecca

The Joy of Others:
Dear So & So,

May this season bring you closer to the loved ones around you. Enjoy the gatherings, the company of others and good tidings. You have been a blessing to my world and for that I am grateful during this Holiday season. Thinking of you! Rebecca

The Magic of the Season:
Dear So & So,

May the Magic of the Holiday season surround you and your loved ones with laughter, love and life long memories. From our home to yours, Merry Christmas!

Humor- Friend:
Dear So & So,

I heard a rumor that you’re on the good list this year! May Santa Claus bring you everything you desire and if not, we’ll hit those after Christmas sales together. Wishing you the very best this holiday season, many cookies and a side of eggnog. See you soon ~

I then enter the pre-determined message into all of my Christmas cards, over and over. Usually as I go along, slight changes are made and I may add one sentence of more ‘personalized’ thought depending on the person.

A Last note…I usually start the process of writing all my Christmas Cards the weekend after Thanksgiving. That way, I’m usually done with all of them by December 10th. The day I traditionally send them all out on…

I have also wrote about writing a Christmas Letter to include inside a Christmas card. Feel free to visit: Writing a Christmas Letter for your Christmas Cards

Happy Writing,

Rebecca
